The United Kingdom remains one of the most popular study destinations in the world, but 2025 brings a series of policy updates that every international student and their family must understand before applying.
Effective from January 2025, the UK government has restricted the right for most international students to bring dependants. Only students enrolled in postgraduate research programmes (PhD and research masters) at approved institutions may bring a spouse or children. Undergraduate and taught postgraduate students can no longer be accompanied by dependants for the duration of their course.
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) requirement has also been extended. Students applying to study certain sensitive subjects at postgraduate level must now obtain ATAS clearance before their visa application is processed. Processing times for ATAS certificates have increased to an average of 30 working days, so applicants are urged to plan well ahead.
English language requirements under the Secure English Language Test (SELT) framework have been tightened. Students applying to degree-level programmes must now demonstrate a minimum IELTS Academic score of 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5, unless their institution specifies a higher threshold.
In a positive development for students, the Graduate visa — which allows eligible graduates to remain in the UK for two years after their studies — remains unchanged. The UK government confirmed this route will be kept under review but has not proposed any closure.
Akopwhales Global Services advises all prospective students to begin their visa documentation at least four months before the intended course start date and to consult a qualified immigration adviser if their circumstances are complex.
